Request for Meeting: Community Investments for Garden City Skyway Twinning Project

 Dear Ministers Sarkaria and McCarthy,

We are writing to you as a group of organizations from the Niagara Region, representing the concerns of the communities in this part of the Greater Golden Horseshoe.

The Province of Ontario plans to make a major infrastructure investment to twin the Garden City Skyway. This project aims to improve traffic flow and future capacity of this important transportation corridor. The process has already started with the selection of the design and build team.

We now urge the Province to extend its commitment to include a Community Investment Plan. This plan would include opportunities to advance social and economic opportunities for local communities. Positive outcomes would include:

  • Workforce Development and Participation Strategy focused on supporting workforce training and pre-apprenticeship opportunities.
  • Neighbourhood Infrastructure Strategies focused on local priorities.
  • Social Procurement policy to ensure local businesses benefit.

We request a meeting with you and your staff at your earliest convenience to review the potential benefits for adjoining communities and the Niagara Region from integrating a Community Investment plan within the Garden City Skyway Twinning Project.
